NORTHOP HALL OLD BOYS 2 BRICKFIELD VETERANS 3
After a 3 month break Brickfield mustered the troops back for a friendly againstthe Old Boyson a windy rain lashed day in Northop Hall. Our hosts play weekly in a Veterans league and was sure to be a very tough test. With a number of players missing from our last game, Brickfield arrived with 13 players. After a slow start by Bricky which was to be expected, Brickfield began to look dangerous with the dual threat of Mark Ray and Adrian Binnersley unsettling the Old Boys defence. Midway through the half and Binnersley was sent clear and cleverly chipped the keeper. Bricky grew in confidence and soon doubled their lead with a flowing move down the right and Neil Beedham's cross was sweetly headed in at the far post by Matt Honey. Alan Jones in goal pulled off a fine save low down but was beaten just on half time when for once the defence was caught square. Half time and Bricky lost Jimmy Taylor, to a groin injury, who was having a fine game in midfield. Old Boys came on strong in the second half but some resolute defending kept them at bay in increasingly difficult conditions. Bricky then scored what proved to be the winner but in controversial circumstances when Mark Ray was put clear with the Old Boys defence claiming offside. His cross was put away by Chris Jones despite continuing protests by the hosts. Brickfields lack of match fitness began to tell in the later stages and Old Boys pulled a goal back following a scramble. Chances came and went for both sides as Bricky hit Northop Hall on the break. A fine win and a great performance by every Brickfield player. Hopefully this will lead to regular fixtures in the New Year.
